myCampmate came to be while CEO Tyler Campbell was in search of forgotten firewood during a family camping trip. As he drove around looking for a store, he wondered why there wasn’t an iPhone app or website that listed the places that outdoor enthusiasts and travelers knew and loved. Throughout the whole trip he brainstormed about creating a social platform that allowed users to share the little known places that they have come to know and love and visit time and time again. Thus, myCampmate was born.
Fast forward 2 years and myCampmate is now a blossoming community of users “pinning” the locations of stores, points of interest, campgrounds, RV parks and much more on a real-time, interactive map. With both an iPhone app and a web app, myCampmate is accessible to you no matter where you go!
Users can also share pins they find interesting with friends and family via social network sites, like Facebook and Twitter. Every pin also has the capability for users to leave comments so that as new information is available about a location it can be added and kept up to date.
In addition to the main map populated with public green and blue pins, there is also a private trip planning section in which users can plan trips by dropping private red pins that only those invited to the trip can see. This is ideal for sharing with family and friends where you will be staying during your trip and pinning things you plan to do and see while you are on vacation.
myCampmate has also begun to be used as a customer service tool for outdoor focused businesses. These businesses are using the app to show their customers where points of interest and special places are located in the area, helping brand themselves as “experts” and giving their customers more than just a dusty, old brochure and general directions.
